How to Calculate GPA

GPA is an average of grade points, but the way courses are weighted matters. Start with your institution’s grade-point scale and credit rules before assuming a simple average matches an official transcript.

Convert grades using the correct scale

A common illustrative scale assigns A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1 and F = 0. That is not a universal policy. Institutions can assign different values to plus and minus grades, use different maximums or exclude particular courses. Obtain the actual mapping for the record you want to reproduce rather than converting a percentage score by an invented universal rule.

For example, 80% is not automatically 3.2 GPA. Multiplying a percentage by four assumes a linear relationship that many grading systems do not use. A course percentage, a letter grade and grade points are separate representations linked by policy. How to calculate a percentage helps with marks earned out of marks available, but it does not determine your school's grade boundaries.

Average equal-weight courses

If four equally weighted courses have grade points 4, 3, 3 and 2, their total is 12 and their average is 12 ÷ 4 = 3.0. The GPA calculator estimates an equal-weight average on a 4.0 scale. It is useful when the included courses have equal weight, but it is not a complete transcript engine with institution-specific policies.

Check whether a zero is an actual grade or a missing input before calculating. Including an ungraded course as zero would lower the average as though a zero-point result had been earned. Conversely, removing a real failing grade because it looks like an empty value can overstate the average. The data should represent recorded outcomes, not guesses about what blank fields mean.

Weight courses by credits when required

For a credit-weighted calculation, multiply each course's grade points by its GPA credits to obtain quality points. Suppose a four-credit course earns 4.0, a three-credit course earns 3.0 and a one-credit course earns 2.0. Their quality points are 16, 9 and 2. Total quality points are 27 and total credits are 8, giving 27 ÷ 8 = 3.375.

The unweighted average of those three grades would be 3.0, so ignoring credits changes the result materially. The University of Illinois registrar provides an institutional example of quality points and GPA hours. Follow your own institution's rules when reproducing an official figure. Combine terms using totals, not just averages

Suppose one term has a GPA of 4.0 over 6 included credits and another has 3.0 over 18 included credits. Averaging 4.0 and 3.0 gives 3.5, but the credit-weighted combined result is (4 × 6 + 3 × 18) ÷ 24 = 3.25. The longer term contributes three times as many credits and therefore receives three times the weight.

Use original quality-point totals when available. Reconstructing totals from a rounded term GPA can introduce a small error that becomes visible on a transcript comparison. A displayed average is a summary, and rounding can discard information needed for exact recombination.

Project a target without promising an outcome

If you have 30 included credits at 3.0 and plan 15 more, reaching a cumulative 3.2 would require 3.6 over the new credits: (3.2 × 45 − 3.0 × 30) ÷ 15 = 3.6. This is an algebraic scenario, not a prediction of future grades. It assumes all planned credits count and the current total is exact under the same scale.

If the required future average exceeds the scale's maximum, the target cannot be reached within those credits under the assumptions. Do not hide that result by capping it at 4.0. More credits, a different target or an applicable institutional repeat policy would change the problem. Those policies must be verified, not invented by the calculator.

Reconcile the result with the official record

Pass/fail courses, withdrawals, repeated courses and transfer credits may receive special treatment. Rounding also differs: an institution might truncate rather than round. Illinois, for example, describes truncation in its GPA guidance; that detail should not be generalized to every school. Keep the official policy alongside your calculation when investigating a discrepancy.

For a quick estimate, the equal-weight tool is convenient. For an official academic decision, use the institution's recorded credits, grade mapping and inclusion rules, and ask its registrar to resolve unexplained differences. If you are tracking improvement, distinguish a direct change in GPA points from a percentage increase. A rise from 3.0 to 3.3 is 0.3 GPA points; expressing it as a percentage does not change how a school evaluates the record.

Check how one course changes an equal-weight average

In an illustrative four-course set with points 4, 3, 3 and 2, the equal-weight GPA is 3.0. If the last grade changes from 2 to 3 while the other grades stay fixed, the total rises from 12 to 13 and the average becomes 3.25. One additional grade point in one of four equal-weight courses raises the average by one quarter of a point, not a full point.

For credit-weighted grades, the effect instead depends on that course's share of the included credits. Raising a three-credit course by one grade point in a fifteen-credit term adds three quality points and raises the term GPA by 3/15 = 0.2. Raising a one-credit course by the same grade-point amount adds only one quality point and raises the average by about 0.0667. This is arithmetic weighting, not a judgment of a course's educational importance.

Such scenarios can help you understand an average, but they should not be confused with an official grade-change or repeat policy. They assume the same included courses and credits, with only one numeric grade-point value altered. If a repeat replaces an earlier grade, both the numerator and the included-credit rules may change. Consult the actual policy rather than applying this one-variable example to a different transcript operation.
