How to use this calculator

Enter estimated maintenance and the additional daily energy you want to explore. The form accepts 100–500 kcal, capped at 15% of maintenance. Review your protein and macro calculations separately instead of interpreting the extra calories as protein alone.

Formula and methodology

Illustrative intake = maintenance kcal/day + selected surplus kcal/day.

Worked example

A 2,400 kcal maintenance estimate plus 200 kcal yields 2,600 kcal/day, an 8.3% increase. A different maintenance estimate of 2,800 with the same addition yields 3,000 kcal/day.

The result compares two energy budgets. It cannot tell you how much of any weight change will be muscle. Training, recovery and the original maintenance estimate remain important unmodelled factors.

Limitations

The percentage cap is a conservative product constraint, not a universally optimal muscle-gain strategy. This tool does not prescribe intake for recovery from illness, low weight or an eating disorder. Weight gain is not linear or entirely lean tissue.

Common mistakes

Do not treat an arbitrary surplus as proof that maintenance is correct. Also distinguish an additional 200 kcal from a total food allowance of 200 kcal; the result includes the original maintenance amount.

Frequently asked questions

Does a larger surplus mean more muscle?

This arithmetic cannot predict muscle growth or its share of weight gain. Increasing the number is not evidence of a better training plan.

Is the surplus added on training days only?

The result is a daily scenario. It does not create a weekly meal or training schedule.
