Pace Calculator

Calculate running or walking pace and speed in kilometres and miles from distance and time.

Your inputs

Example values are editable. Calculations stay in this browser tab and are not saved to history.

Your estimate

Enter your values and calculate. Results will appear here.

This is an average over the entered time, not instantaneous speed.

How to use this calculator

Enter the distance and elapsed minutes in matching units. Decimal minutes are supported: 30 minutes 30 seconds is 30.5, not 30.30.

Formula and methodology

Pace = elapsed minutes ÷ distance; speed = distance ÷ elapsed hours. One mile = 1.609344 km.

Worked example

5 km in 30 minutes gives 6:00 min/km and 10 km/h, equivalent to about 9:39 min/mile and 6.21 mph.

What the result means

This is an average over the entered time, not instantaneous speed.

Limitations

It does not account for hills, pauses or varying effort. Decide consistently whether elapsed time includes breaks.

Common mistakes

Do not type hours into a field labelled minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Why are pace and speed different?

Pace is time per unit distance; speed is distance per unit time. Faster speed means a lower pace number.
