How to use this calculator
Count steps for one walking session, measure the average length of a single step and enter moving time. The tool checks the implied speed before applying the 3.8-MET level-walking reference. Use centimetres for step length even when body weight is in pounds.
Formula and methodology
Distance km = steps × one-step length cm ÷ 100,000. Speed = distance ÷ hours. For level walking at 2.8–3.4 mph: gross kcal = 3.8 × 3.5 × kg ÷ 200 × minutes.
Worked example
At 5,000 steps of 70 cm, distance is 3.5 km. Completing them in 42 minutes gives 5 km/h, within the supported pace band. For 70 kg, the estimated gross energy is 196 kcal, or 144 kcal above rest.

Limitations
Terrain, fitness, gait, speed and step-length variation affect the estimate. It excludes running, stairs and walking outside 2.8–3.4 mph. Whole-day step totals with an arbitrary duration are not suitable inputs.
Common mistakes
A stride can mean two steps. Enter one-step length, or the distance will double. Do not include seated time and pauses in the moving duration.

Why is my walking time rejected?
Your steps and step length imply a speed outside the reference band. The tool withholds an unsupported estimate instead of assigning an arbitrary calorie value.
Is a step always worth the same calories?
No. The result depends on weight, duration and assumptions about the walking activity.
